History
Officially
organized in 1921, the Woodruff Fire Department dates
back as far as the late 1800's when local townsmen
formed a bucket brigade for battling fires in the
community. Since its official organization the
department has had 11 Fire Chief's with the Westmoreland
Family being the most reoccurring name on the rosters.
The department has had four stations throughout its
history, with two of the stations being located on East
Hayne St. Currently the department operates out of
two stations, one of which is the former National Guard
Armory (Headquarters), located at 220 Armory Drive and a
sub-station located on the northern end of the district
in the Crescent Community, at 710 Cooper Bridge Road.
The department has had many major fires throughout the
years, with the most recent and memorable one being at
one of the City's two cotton mills.
Today the
Woodruff Fire Department consists of two stations
housing three (3) engines, two (2) ladders, two (2)
