The Land For Station 3 Has Been Purchased
The Woodruff Fire Department has
secured the land for the construction of Station 3. It
is located at the corner of S.J. Workman Highway, (Road 50),
& Aiken Rd. The station will be a 4800 square foot two
(2) bay structure and will be a welcomed addition to the
department. A station has been needed in this area for
many years and now it looks as if this achievement of this
goal is just around the corner. Retired Chief Ronnie
Godfrey identified this target area as needing a station a
few years back. With the purchase of the land the
goals set by Chief Godfrey are being achieved.

over 145,000 miles. The unit has only 20,000 miles and

City of Woodruff Fire Department Places Additional Order
With Sutphen Corporation
The City of
Woodruff Fire Department placed an additional order with the
Sutphen Corporation on Tuesday November 24th, 2009 for
additional apparatus approved through the recent bond
measure. The order consists of a sister engine
identical to the engine ordered in May of this year at a
cost of $363,750.00. The same cost as the previously
ordered engine. The second apparatus ordered was a
Sutphen 70' Aerial Platform at a cost of $733,913.00
The measure also includes the equipment for the two
apparatus which has not been ordered as of yet. This
brings the total amount of apparatus ordered from the
Sutphen Corporation over the last six months to
$1,461,413.00. The additional apparatus will provide
some much needed upgrades to the existing fleet. It
will also allow for a new apparatus at all three fire
stations. Check back in the future for a drawing of
the Aerial Platform.

City of Woodruff Fire Department Receives Third Reading
Approval From Spartanburg County for $1.75 million Bond
Issue
Monday November 23rd, 2009 was a
historic date that will forever be etched in the minds of
the members of the City of Woodruff Fire Department.
Spartanburg County Council Approved Third and Final Reading on a $1.75
million Bond Issue. This bond will be used for the
construction of a new Sub-Station, Station 3, to be located
on S. J. Workman Highway. It will also allow the fire
department to order a second new engine identical to the
current engine on order with the Sutphen Corporation and
also a Sutphen 70' Platform Aerial Device. The second
engine will be stationed at Station 2 located at 710 Cooper
Bridge Road and the new aerial will be located at Station 3
upon completion. Check back for more information
concerning the bond in the coming weeks.
Woodruff To Receive New Sutphen Engine
On Monday May 18th,
2009 the Woodruff City Council voted unanimously to
approve the purchase of a new fire engine and the
supplemental equipment to properly equip the unit when
placed in service. The entire project was placed out
for competitive bids during the month of April and when
all figures had be compiled the amount of the project
totaled $450,943.48. The contract will be signed on
Friday May 22nd, 2009 between the City of
Woodruff and Stevens Fire Apparatus, a representative of
the Sutphen Corporation. The unit will not require a
tax increase and will not place any extra burden upon
the taxpayers of the city or the fire service area. The
truck itself will cost $363,750.00 with accompanying
equipment making up the $87,198.43. “The fire
department was able to take a $55,000.00 line item for
an existing General Obligation Bond that will be
complete in 2011 and apply those funds that will be
freed up to make the payments,” says Fire Chief Steve
Quinn. “We knew the city would not be able to outright
purchase a new vehicle of this amount given the current
economic situation so that presented us with some
obstacles early that we knew were going to require some
creative financing,” said Quinn. Quinn also added, “We
feel this option makes the best economic sense to the
city without having to institute a tax increase, during
these times, that would not have been a very popular
decision.” The unit will be delivered sometime around
February of 2010 with the first payment not being due
until February 2011. “The moral of the fire department
has been very high over my first 11 months and this just
adds to the excitement and enthusiasm of the
firefighters,” says Quinn. Quinn closed by saying,
“This is a great bunch of guys here and an equally great
fire service that they provide for our citizens, this
will make it even greater.”

Fire
strikes Woodruff stadium, destroys press box
The press
box at Woodruff High School's football stadium was
destroyed by fire late Tuesday night. Spartanburg
School District 4 Superintendent Rallie Liston was
on the scene at the stadium, named for legendary
Woodruff coach Willie Varner, at about 11 p.m. He
said firefighters had the blaze contained, but that
the press box was a "total loss." Liston said
the fire was reported at about 10 p.m., but it had
apparently been smoldering for some time. Woodruff
head coach Brian Lane, when reached on his cell
phone at about 10:45 p.m., said he was unaware of
the fire. Liston said
authorities were working to determine the cause of
the fire, but the working theory was that a
lightning strike started the blaze. "Even the
fence is still arcing in places, and that leads us
to believe lightning hit it and shorted something
out," Liston said. "There was no evidence of any
vandalism." The stadium
was renovated in 2004, but Liston said the press box
was not part of the update. He said the press box
was designed by Varner, who died earlier this year. "It's
unfortunate that it happened, but it looks like
something that couldn't be helped," Liston said.
"We're going to continue to investigate, but we will
build it back. We'll build it better, and it will be
ready when the Wolverines play here in August."
Husband, wife die in early morning fire in Woodruff
A fire that broke out shortly before 6
a.m. Thursday at a home in Woodruff
claimed the lives of two people. The Spartanburg County
Coroner's office has
identified the victims
as Roger Dale Ivey, 60,
and Beverly Renee Ivey,
46, both of 1737 Kilgore
Bridge Road. Tippy, the
couple's 12-year-old
mixed-breed pet dog,
also died in the fire.
Maj. Dan Johnson with
the Spartanburg County
Sheriff's office said
the cause of the fire is
still under
investigation, but it
appeared to be
accidental.
Steve Quinn, Woodruff
fire chief, said
firefighters responded
at 5:41 a.m. to the home
off Kilgore Bridge Road
near Highway 221.
"When we arrived on
scene - knowing we were
dispatched to a
structure fire with
entrapment - we found
about three-quarters of
the house burned," he
said. "We had the fire
contained within about
10 minutes and made
entry and found the
victims in a bedroom."
Stephen Lully, with the
Spartanburg County
Coroner's Office, said
the couple died from
thermal burns and carbon
monoxide poisoning
because of the house
fire.
The couple's extended
family, including their
daughter, Ruth Lowe, who
lives next door,
gathered at the home
Thursday.
"They were wonderful
people," Lowe said. "She
loved to do arts and
crafts and research our
family's history. She
would make something
beautiful out of
anything. He was a
mechanic and a handyman
who loved to do
woodworking. They were
both family-oriented. We
are going to miss them
so much."
Lowe said she was
awakened Thursday by a
frantic phone call from
her mother just moments
before she died.
"She told me the house
was on fire and that
they were trying to get
out and that I should
call the fire
department," she said.
"I called 911, but they
didn't make it."
Lully said it appeared
the couple had attempted
to escape the house via
a window but had failed.
The family said Renee
Ivey was a native of
Pickens, and Roger Ivey
moved to the Upstate in
1968 from Georgia.
Renee Ivey ran a small
business from the home.
Roger Ivey was a
metalworker for a local
automotive company. He
was a former Marine who
served in the Vietnam
War, earning a Purple
Heart and other medals
for distinguished
service.
"Both of them were
caring people," said
James New, Roger Ivey's
brother.
"If you had a problem,
they would help you. If
you needed a place to
stay, they would bring
you into their home.
They would have done
anything for anybody."
